Another Beloved Pet RIP

He came to us in July 1999, a nine-month old kitten. He had belonged to John's dad who had passed away then. He was a farm kitty. Loved to be outside except during thunderstorms when he would beg to come in and hide or curl up near one of us. These last few years, as he got older, he did enjoy being inside more during the coldest weather. The rest of the time he was outside chasing leaves, bugs, sleeping in the sun on the porch.
He crossed the Bridge sometime after midnight last night (11/5/12). Not sick. The victim of a predator.  Coyote or maybe a big hawk or owl.  He just would not stay in the house. I last saw him, petted, and talked to him sometime around midnight when I went out to do my routine late-night check. Please guard your beloved pets.
Our little Pester, who has to be forced to come in the house, is also missing at this time. I don't know if she is also a victim or if she' s hiding out, but at least I haven't found any remains, so I'm guardedly hopeful at this time (Tuesday afternoon). Her tortoise shell coloring makes it easy for her to hide, so I can't always see her. She isn't in the shelter. Whatever got PetCat could have frightened her sufficiently to keep her away for a while. She's younger and agile and fast. I hope she's safe.

Pester update (Tuesday night): She's here. All curled up in her little shelter on the front porch. I might just have to go out there and drag her in shortly. Don't want whatever got PetCat to come back tonight--or ever.

Sweet old PetCat, you will be missed.

  1. It is so hard to lose a beloved pet. I am sorry PetCat is gone, but hope it was quick with whatever was the predator.

Give Pester a pat on his head for me.

  2. I'm so sorry. He had quite a life, didn't he? It's so hard with cats, and their need to be outside....

  3. It's always the concern with outdoors pets. But they do so love their freedom! I'm sad for your loss. What a dear name he had ~ PetCat. Must have made you smile just, saying his name. And so very glad that Pester is well.

  6. Pester is well. I just wish I could get her to come in without a battle and stay in without slipping out every time the door opens, then running from me when I try to get her in.

  7. OH, Oh, OH, ... Kitty Boy almost always comes in at night, but on those rare nights when he does not we worry too - too many coyotes and owls.

    1. We do the best we can. It doesn't always work. You just have to be hopeful. It is always such a relief to see them when they return.

These two days whenever I've pulled into our driveway, I've missed seeing him do his routine of running down the porch steps and out to the driveway to greet us. It will be a long time before I get past that.

    1. I know you just lost your little Milo, Laura. And some kitty and bun friends have had recent losses, too. It's so hard.

Just losing PetCat would have been bad enough, but the circumstances made it even worse. If he had just *completely* disappeared, it would have been a little less traumatic...it was pretty awful (sorry, no intent to disturb anyone with that).

  9. Sorry to hear about PetCat and hope that whatever it was that got to him doesn't get to your other pets too. Keep them warm inside with you, at night if possible.
    Smile today. :)
