Watercolor Study

I'm trying watercolor again. It's been years since I've done any painting with it. The medium has always been difficult for me and I have been rather intimidated by it. I decided it's time for that to change. After working on a few paintings, I don't feel quite as uncomfortable with it, but I think it is no easier than before. After working on this study using a photo of a painting from an old artist's magazine, I could only say to my teacher "It's hard!" Her response would be a gentle chuckle and kind words of encouragement. I draw well when I practice, but have never felt competent as a painter.

Here's a photo of the original, a still life with a Roseville vase, fruit, and money plant (lunaria),

and my version. [As usual, I've loaded these with the iPhone and the format cuts off part of the photo--click to view entire photo] Obviously, I changed the colors and the fruit. I also made some changes in the background because I did not want to attempt all that design in the drapery. I might continue to tweak it a little, but I think it's mostly finished--at least I am fairly happy with my version. Fairly happy.

Watercolor artists amaze me. These last few weeks have given me an even greater respect for their work.  I am fascinated by their skill and the way they manage the medium. I do not know if I will ever gain any proficiency with it, but working with it during this period of time in my classes has made me want to keep trying. I just hope that at some point in the course of these classes I will become more comfortable with my painting.

  1. I think it's lovely! Your color choices are stunning. They remind me of the color combinations on some birds we saw at the zoo last week.

  2. You're far better at it than I would be--I love your choice of colors; much better than the original, and your background doesn't overwhelm the subject the way it does in the original.

  5. Gee! Thanks to all of you for your nice comments and votes of confidence. I still find watercolor painting difficult to do, but as I have worked with it more, I have discovered interesting things about it that make me want to continue to explore this medium. I have to give my teacher, Mrs. Mary Thomas Vangegrift, a talented artist and amazing woman of 88 years of age, for her encouragement and inspiration.

  6. I prefer your version, but if you find water colour difficult try oils or acrylics that's what I use as I find water colours difficult too

  7. Thanks, Speedy. I've done oils and acrylics for many years. If you scroll down to the bottom of my sidebar, you'll see part of an acrylic I did back in the '80's. Of the two, I prefer oils, but use acrylics most often because I find it easier not to have to use turpentine, linseed oil, and other such accessories. I've always wanted to use paint in watercolors, but just didn't seem to be able to work with it very well. I'm trying, but it's still hard!

Money plant - reminds me - years ago, not knowing about this plant we planted one. Next year the whole neighborhood had them!!!

  9. Your picture is lovely. I like the way the colors contrast. And the purples and blues swim together beautifully. Good job!

    1. Thanks. I wanted to use contrasting colors. And it's hot here. The blues and purples were more cooling than those of the original.
