The Lookout

This fellow was having a leisurely stroll on the fishing pier at Gulf Shores State Park when the wind picked up and he flew-hopped up onto the railing to get a look at the developing weather situation. Although fairly heavy rain was again headed our way, he did not seem concerned and just hopped down and continued strolling. The photo was made in July when we camped at the state park for a couple of days.

  1. What a majestic fellow. He looks like an oil painting. Lovely.

    1. Indeed. I love herons and other wading birds. The Great Blues are the largest of all around here.

  3. "Majestic" was just the word that came into my mind as well when I first saw the picture!

    1. Yes, very much so. He seemed to behave in a rather royal manner as well.

    1. This was the first time I had the opportunity to be so close to one. They are good at keeping their distance. I was surprised I was able to get so close. I've been told by wildlife rescue people to stay clear of the beak should you ever discover one injured in the wild.

    1. Although they are mostly gray, his colors do not show up well with the stormy light.

  6. That would make a fine subject for a painting, nice photo. Looks relaxing near the water too.
    Smile today. :)

    1. I am thinking seriously of trying this in oils. I might do the other one in oils as well.

  7. I have driven across America a time or two. Two birds live just about everywhere. Crows and Herons. What a bird!

    1. I think you might be right RG, but I'd have to add starlings to the list.
